My friend is moving away...

{backdated}My friend, Mike, has accepted a new job in Ohio. He's excited to bring his family closer to their extended family and grow some new roots in a place they hope feels more like home. He suprised me and most of our mutual friends and coworkers.
I'm sure I will spend plenty of time saying farewell to him at lunches, happy hours, and maybe I'll even get a round of golf in before he moves on.

Our in-laws both live in Pittsburgh, so I expect this will not be the last I see of him and his family. It would be entirely unsuprising if we worked together again someday. But I imagine the visits will be few and far between.

The strangest part of learning about this has been our kids. Lori and I benefitted from watching Mike and Maggie survive their twin boys first few years before Maura was born. It was an invaluable experience and we are grateful to have been a part of their family life. I stopped Lori from mentioning it to Maura the other day. The way she follows the boys around, its almost puppy love. I get a little choked up thinking about Maura missing her big boyfriends. When she understands it will likely be fine, I think the worst part is my own imagination of her perspective.
