Connecticut Fancy

So thank to my folks and Rink Mann's Backyard Sugarin', I have successfully made my own Maple Syrup. I've got just over a quart of syrup. The process was exceptionally simple:

  1. Tap the tree's

  2. Collect the sap

  3. Boil it down

  4. Filter it through felt

The challenge is the 33:1 ratio of sap to syrup. Boiling off 10 gallons of water for a quart of syrup is harder than it sounds. My first half cup of syrup was done completely on the stove. The remainder was from a partial evaporation on the grill then "finishing" on the stove. It tastes like maple syrup, and the final product definitely benefits by being filtered.

Oh yeah, pictures here.
