Pre-Heating the Flu

So, while constructing my first fire, I learned about preheating the flu to get the chimney "drawing" air rather than drafting into the house. Fortunately the family was going to Toys-R-Us anyway, but I think I encouraged their departure. The fire is now okay. Next lesson, adjusting the damper...

A useful trick is to first burn a piece of newspaper. Since it burns quickly, it creates an initial (semi) strong updraft. This gives your fire some "breathing room" as it slowly increases in strength.

That reminds me - call a chimney sweep!
