Pyeloplasty

Apparently the ureter develops "upwards" from the bladder and joins with the kidney, this becomes the pathway for urine flow out of the kidney. In some people, the tube can be slow running due to 1) high implantation: where it connects to the top of the kidney (creating a kink effect); 2) being strung over a blood vessel or 3) a narrowing of the tube generally near the connection with the kidney. When this happens the kidney becomes enlarged (hydronephrosis) and can result in complications. Sometimes hydronephrosis can be caused by the ureter "kinking" on the pelvic bone during development.

Unfortunately, Kieran's left kidney/ureter will have to be repaired via surgery. Its low risk, but the idea obviously is not thrilling to me. There are other things I would rather do on a given day than hand my son over to someone to be cut open. But there is little I would rather do than help my children the best I can.

I don't think it will be fun waiting during the ~1.5 hour procedure or having him in the hospital for a day or two. Suprisingly, however, I don't think of him as any less perfect.

During the 1.5 hour procedure you will not be alone. St. Theresa, St Ann, St. Francis, St. Anthony and St. Jude and anyone else that will hear my prayers will be with you!!!!!

Thanks Auntie Donna!
Rumor on the "street" has it that the procedure is roughly equilivant to a tonsilectomy... So we've got that going for us, which is nice...

Tonsilectomies are also only annoying in hindsight. I kinda doubt Kerian will be remembering this one. Quick recovery for all!

I don't think anyone could possibly think of either of your children as any less perfect - they are quite precious those little cherubs!

If you need any help while Kieran is recouperating - perhaps some play dates for Maura - you know where to find us, we would be happy to help of course!
