Heat Pump Restored... Turkey Successful... Home on Friday

Thanks to Rob from Harry Carpenter & Sons, we have a new "control board" and heat again. Although we have a couple of doors/windows that are too drafty.

We had a nice Thanksgiving: Lori, Maura & Me. We had stuffing, turkey and squash. Nice, simple, calm.

Today is Friday... I was planning on going in to work for a few hours, and in fact, got myself up and dressed. Letting my mind wander on the drive in, I grinned to myself thinking how my little quirks and nearly obsessive compulsive habits help me get through life. For example, my keycard for the garage stays in the card, so I can't forget it... then I think, Wait where's my wallet?? It has the key card to the office. Crap, so 100 yards from the office driveway, I u-turn and return home. My wallet isn't where it usually is, where could I have put it?

I wonder if Lori saw it and grabbed it to meet me for lunch, she probably doesn't know I need it to get into the office?

I've been home for 2 hours, looking for an hour and a half... Lori just called from my office, she had my wallet. **sigh**

Heat Pump Crashed

It is the first snow of the season, the first "White" Thanksgiving in Stamford since 1989, and we wake up to a chilly house. Thermostat: no response. Break out the space heater, call the air pump service company. I'm not a happy camper.

Bayesian Spam Filters

Spam is a pain in the butt, but a couple of different sources are attempting to address spam in a new way. I've been trying popfile, but I found these too:

Slashdot | Mozilla Adding Spam Filters
Paul Graham's Plan for Spam

Even Microsoft is starting some FUD.

Why isn't everyone a conspiracy theorist?

When the mass media (Yahoo!) publishes image like this, shouldn't we be concerned that imagery is being manipulated. Regardless of my political views or thoughts on GWB, isn't it a little bit spooky to be blatantly depicting the President with a Halo.

Breaking Yahoo's Monopoly?

So I've been a long time My Yahoo! subscriber. While I enjoy the portal with current headlines and stock prices, these sites are almost dime a dozen. My email is relegated to a spam trap and there are the annoying popups. Some of the features are fun, but the sharp turn to premium services and advertisements are becoming tiresome. Enter My Way... I just learned of this today, I don't know if its going to be any good, but I'm keeping an eye on this one. Its got a shot, it even has a "speed bar," but while My Way will import my Yahoo! bookmarks, it doesn't render them on the "speed bar."

Tablet PC or Smart Display

So Microsoft and the "Industry" are pitching these gizmos to business users. Obviously appealing to the people with deep pockets. But the reality is that these are probably most appealing to the couch potatoes who want to surf on a magazine sized device. Can you say "bathroom computer"? It may be gross, but probably not too far from the truth. Personally I like the Compaq (HP) TC1000. They are still a little too expensive for the performance point.

Update:
Maybe what I really want is one of these. ViewSonic's price is likely too high. But this might be the cheaper/more appropriate path to what I really want.
